Lesson D18 1:23 18 of 26
Find the Salinas buildings and named areas: parking, the terminal, the beacon, the helipad, the tower and the North Aero ramp.
The video plays from YouTube. FAA airport diagrams, d-TPP cycle 2611, effective 29 OCT 2026. Not for navigation.
Buildings and named areas help you find your way on the ground. The diagram draws each building as a solid black shape. Most buildings have no name. Salinas has two general aviation parking areas. An arrow points from each label to its area.
A parking area, also called an apron or ramp, is where airplanes park, load, and get fuel. At a new airport, find the parking areas before you land. The terminal label points to the terminal building. Near it, a small star marks the airport beacon.
At night, its white and green flashes show you where the airport is. The circled H, marked H1, is the helipad. The Chart Supplement lists it as 90 by 90 feet. It is near the south parking area. Watch for helicopters when you taxi there.
TWR marks the control tower, south of Runway 8-26. Controllers there direct traffic on the ground and in the air near the airport. East of taxiway Papa, the diagram labels a hazardous cargo area.
The North Aero ramp sits where taxiway Lima meets taxiway Charlie. When you call for taxi, always say where you are. At home, that is the North Aero ramp. Next, the Salinas radio frequencies and tower hours.
Before you fly, check the current airport diagram, the Chart Supplement and NOTAMs.
A discovery flight is actual flight training with a certified flight instructor at the Salinas Airport. Your hands on the controls, with the airport diagram on your knee.
