Lesson D17 1:17 17 of 26
Read the symbols for closed pavement, construction areas and non-movement areas on an airport diagram.
The video plays from YouTube. FAA airport diagrams, d-TPP cycle 2611, effective 29 OCT 2026. Not for navigation.
The legend has symbols for closed pavement, construction areas, and non-movement areas. A closed runway has an X at each end. A closed taxiway or ramp shows X marks on gray. At Long Beach, X marks sit on several taxiways near the west end of Runway 8L-26R. Do not taxi there.
On the ground, yellow crosses mark a closed runway. A closed taxiway may have barricades or a yellow cross. Some closures have no marks at all. Check NOTAMs and the ATIS before you taxi. A dotted outline means under construction. At Monterey, one sits beside taxiway Alfa, south of Runway 10R-28L.
Hatched lines show a non-movement area, such as a ramp or a parking area. The tower does not control it. Two yellow lines mark its edge, one solid and one dashed. The solid line is on the non-movement side. At a towered airport, get approval from air traffic control before you enter the movement area.
The Salinas diagram shows none of these symbols. Next, the Salinas buildings and areas.
Before you fly, check the current airport diagram, the Chart Supplement and NOTAMs.
A discovery flight is actual flight training with a certified flight instructor at the Salinas Airport. Your hands on the controls, with the airport diagram on your knee.
