Spin ground lesson

What this lesson is for: being able to teach spin awareness, avoidance, and recovery to a Student who will never intentionally spin an airplane.

This is a ground lesson and it is the only spin lesson North Aero delivers. It happens before you ever spin an airplane, on purpose: the flight is meant to confirm an understanding you already have, not to build one while the airplane is rotating.

It is not a substitute for the spin flight, and the spin flight is not a substitute for it.

The spin flight and the 61.183(i) endorsement are yours to arrange. North Aero does not provide spin flight training and does not book a provider for you. You find one, you pay them, and you obtain the endorsement. We will help: you were told at enrollment, you were told again at lesson 7, and today we check where you have got to. We give you the questions to ask a provider and the checklist of what your endorsement must actually say, and we verify it when it lands. See policy/EXTERNAL-SPIN-MODULE.md.

Bring the date today if you have one. If you have not started, say so now rather than at lesson

  1. No endorsement means no checkride, and by lesson 38 your options have narrowed to whatever you can arrange in a few weeks.

Before you arrive

Read:

  • AC 61-67C with Changes 1 and 2, Stall and Spin Awareness Training, in full. You skimmed it before lesson 6. Read it properly now.
  • FAA-H-8083-3C, the chapter covering stalls and spins.
  • FAA-S-ACS-25, task AI.X.I, in full.
  • The flight manual of the airplane you fly: find the spin recovery procedure, and find whether the airplane is approved for intentional spins and in what category and loading. Both facts, from that document, not from anywhere else.
  • Your own lesson 6 base-to-final scenario work.

Deliverable: Write the ground lesson you will teach on spin awareness, to the template in standards/LESSON-PLAN-TEMPLATE.md, pitched at a private student in the pattern phase. This is one of your seventeen P3 plans, and it is the one named specifically. Bring it on paper.

Also bring one sentence: what you would change about the base-to-final lesson you wrote in phase 1, and why.

Who you are teaching today

A private student in the pattern phase. Not a commercial pilot, not an examiner, not your instructor.

That is the whole difficulty of this lesson, and it is worth thinking about before you arrive. You know more about spins than this Student will ever need. The skill being assessed is choosing what transfers.

What they need is to not be there. A career of teaching spin content is almost entirely avoidance: recognizing the conditions, respecting coordination, and recovering at the first indication of a stall. Recovery from a developed spin is interesting, and for your Student it is nearly irrelevant.

What we will cover

  1. What a spin is: a stall plus yaw, and why it takes both.
  2. Autorotation, with something in your hands rather than on a page.
  3. The entry conditions that actually produce one.
  4. The four phases: entry, incipient, developed, recovery.
  5. Recovery, from the approved material for the airplane you fly.
  6. Why an incipient spin and a developed spin are different problems at pattern altitude.
  7. The accident categories, including the base-to-final overshoot you built a lesson around in phase 1.
  8. Teaching spin awareness to somebody who will never spin.
  9. Load factor, uncoordinated flight, and the stall speed your Student is not expecting.
  10. Weight, balance, and whether your airplane is approved for spins at all.

Two things that are aircraft specific and are not in this document

The recovery procedure and the spin approval status belong to the airplane. Not to a handbook, not to a study guide, and not to the airplane you trained in. You will open the flight manual for the airplane you fly and read both out loud. If it turns out your airplane is not approved for intentional spins, that is a useful thing to have discovered before a Student asked.

What you will do

  1. Work through the aerodynamics, including autorotation with a model in hand.
  2. Find the recovery procedure and the approval status in your airplane's manual.
  3. Revisit your lesson 6 base-to-final scenario and say what you would now change.
  4. Teach spin awareness to the Simulated Student, who today is a private student in the pattern phase.
  5. Critique yourself before anybody critiques you.

How you will be assessed

  1. You teach spin awareness to the Simulated Student for at least ten minutes, pitched at a private student in the pattern phase, and answer at least four Student questions without reading from notes. A recited answer does not meet this standard. A delivered lesson does.
  2. You distinguish a stall from a spin in the taught presentation, naming yaw as the second ingredient, in terms a private student can use in the pattern.
  3. You name the entry conditions that produce a spin and connect at least two of them to a specific phase of flight a private student will actually be in.
  4. You describe the four phases of a spin and state why an incipient spin and a developed spin are different problems for a Student at pattern altitude.
  5. You locate the spin recovery procedure and the spin approval status for the airplane you fly, in that airplane's own approved material, and state both out loud.
  6. You teach spin avoidance as the primary content, and can say in one sentence why avoidance rather than recovery is what a private student needs.
  7. You revise your lesson 6 base-to-final scenario, naming at least one specific change and the reason for it.
  8. You deliver a self-critique before hearing the instructor's.

Falling short does not block lesson 32. No proficiency gate. It triggers the visibility rule in policy/REMEDIATION-VISIBILITY.md. It does not formally block the external spin flight either, but if standards 2 to 4 are not met we will move the flight rather than send you to confirm an understanding you do not yet have.

What usually goes wrong

  • Spending most of the lesson on the developed spin. It is the interesting part and it is the least useful part for the person in front of you.
  • Reciting a recovery acronym as though it were the procedure. The procedure is in the airplane's manual. The acronym is a way of remembering the shape of it.
  • Saying "stall plus yaw" without ever making the yaw concrete.
  • Teaching commercial-level aerodynamics to a private student. Correct content, wrong pitch, and it is a fail on the standard rather than a style note.
  • Answering "can we go try one?" without mentioning whether the airplane is approved.
  • Letting hangar folklore go by with a soft correction. "You just let go and it recovers" is common, it is wrong in the general case, and it needs a clear answer.
  • Telling the accident as a story instead of teaching it as a category. You learned this in lesson 6.
  • Assuming a trainer is approved for spins because it is a trainer. Go and look.
  • Presenting advisory circular guidance as regulation. You must be able to say which is which.

When I will take the airplane

Not applicable. This is a ground lesson and we do not fly it.

The spin-related intervention thresholds you will meet are in lesson 33, where the cross-controlled and elevator trim stall demonstrations are flown, and in the external provider's briefing for your spin flight.
