Objective

The candidate teaches the systems of the airplane they will instruct in, from that airplane's own approved material, and can teach a student what to do when a system misbehaves.

Lesson steps: the elements, in teaching order

Element 8 is the method. Most candidates teach systems as plumbing diagrams. A student needs to know what it looks like when it breaks and what to do, and the schematic is only there to make the indication make sense.

Element 7 is what the ACS actually emphasizes and it is what an examiner asks about.

Element 10. Angle of attack indicators, and why they are taught here

This is taught whether or not the airplane you instruct in has one. That is the FAA's recommendation, read live on 2026-08-14 from the FAA-H-8083-15B Addendum of April 2015: pilot schools should incorporate training on angle of attack indicators in their syllabi whether their training aircraft are equipped with them or not, and instructors should get training on them from somebody knowledgeable before instructing in an equipped airplane.

It is guidance, not regulation (US-3.4), and the candidate must be able to say which it is. It is in this program because the reasoning holds regardless of who published it, and because a candidate who first meets an AOA indicator in a Student's airplane will teach it badly.

A note on the citation, so nobody thinks it is a typo. The FAA published this AOA material as an addendum to the Instrument Flying Handbook. It is not instrument content and it does not belong only to instrument flying. That is simply where the FAA put it. See sources/FAA-SOURCES.md.

What to teach, and it is four things

  1. What it measures. The angle between the wing and the oncoming air, presented as a margin to the critical angle of attack. Stall margin, shown continuously, rather than inferred.
  2. Why airspeed alone is not enough. The published stall speed holds in unaccelerated flight, in coordinated flight, at one weight. Outside those conditions it is not the number the wing is using. An airplane can stall at any airspeed.
  3. What does not change it. For a given configuration the wing always stalls at the same angle of attack, and that critical angle does not move with weight, bank angle, temperature, density altitude, or centre of gravity. This is the sentence a Student remembers.
  4. What limits it. Calibration, an unheated probe or vane, the type of indicator, flap setting, and wing contamination. The limitations belong to the installation, and the candidate goes to that airplane's own approved material and the manufacturer for them, per cross-cutting requirement 5.

The trap to teach against. An AOA indicator is an awareness instrument, not a permission slip. A Student who learns to fly the indicator instead of the airplane has swapped one number for another, and the device's own limitations are exactly the conditions in which they would most want to trust it.

Where this goes next. Lessons 30, 32, and 33 use it: slow flight is where a margin becomes visible, and the accelerated stall is the demonstration that proves point 2 above.

  5. The candidate teaches indication before mechanism, or explains why mechanism came first.
  6. The candidate states what an angle of attack indicator measures and two of its limitations, and says whether the airplane they instruct in has one, and can say that the FAA's guidance to teach this is guidance rather than regulation.
  7. The candidate delivers a self-critique before hearing the instructor's.

Deliverable: Pick one system in the airplane you will instruct in. On one page, write: what it does, what a failure looks like from the seat, what the pilot does, and where in the flight manual the student would find that. Do not copy any number out of the manual. Cite where it is instead.
