Objective

The candidate teaches a technical subject to a Simulated Student rather than reciting it, and learns the shape every remaining phase 2 lesson uses. The subject is principles of flight, chosen because the candidate already knows it cold as a pilot, which isolates the teaching problem from the knowledge problem.

This is the phase 2 tracer bullet. It is the first time the technical subject shape meets real content.

Lesson steps: the elements, in teaching order

Check each element as it is taught. Leave anything not done blank. Sign and date once at the bottom.

Element 2 is the one that transfers. The candidate knows all of elements 3 to 8 already. What they have never done is decide what a person who does not know it needs first, and what can wait.

Element 6 is where most candidates over-teach. Four turning tendencies, each with a mechanism, is more than a primary student can hold at once. Watch whether the candidate prioritizes or dumps.

Instructor actions

  1. Set up phase 2 in element 1. Be explicit that the candidate already knows this material and that the lesson is not about whether they know it.
  2. Teach elements 2 to 8. Model the organizing decisions out loud as you go: say why you are introducing the four forces before stability rather than after.
  3. Assign the element for element 9 at the start of the lesson, not in advance.
  4. Simulated Student role. A primary student around 10 hours. Ask "why" twice on the same point. Ask one question that requires the candidate to admit a simplification they made.
  5. Do not let a whiteboard diagram substitute for an explanation.
  6. Critique against standards/CRITIQUE-STANDARD.md.

  1. Arrive with the deliverable.
  2. Teach an assigned element for about ten minutes to the Simulated Student.

  4. The candidate directs the Simulated Student to a live publication at least once, rather than asserting a fact from memory.
  5. The candidate prioritizes within element 6, teaching the turning tendency that matters most at the student's stage rather than all four equally.
  6. The candidate delivers a self-critique before hearing the instructor's.

Deliverable: A one-page teaching outline for load factor in turns, aimed at a student with about 10 hours. Say what you would teach first, what you would leave out entirely, and one question you would ask to find out whether it landed.

Worked example

Available and used: the 2026-07-29 power-off stalls lesson. Use it for element 2. That lesson is a technical subject taught to a Simulated Student by a candidate who could already fly the maneuver, which is exactly the situation here. Ask the candidate what the teacher had to decide before speaking, and what they would have ordered differently.

Assessment notes

Grade the organizing, not the aerodynamics. The candidate's knowledge of principles of flight is not in question and treating it as though it were wastes the lesson.
