The learning process

The candidate changes one thing about how they teach because of something in the learning process, and can say which principle drove the change. A candidate who can name the laws of learning but teaches identically before and after has not passed this lesson.

Read:

• Your own lesson 1 Session Transcript. All of it, before this lesson.

Deliverable: Your lesson 1 teaching block, rewritten. Bring both versions. In two or three sentences, say what you changed and which principle from chapter 3 made you change it. If you read your transcript and concluded nothing needed changing, bring that argument instead and be ready to defend it.

Element 9 is the seam to lesson 4. The ACS puts evaluation versus critique inside the learning process, not inside assessment, which tells you it is a learning concept before it is a grading one. Teach it here; lesson 4 applies it.

Element 7's learning plateau is the one to spend time on. Every candidate will meet a student on a plateau, and the untrained response, more repetition, is usually wrong.

Room: Meet running, separate devices, headsets.

1. Teach elements 1 to 12, anchoring each to the candidate's own learning wherever possible.
2. Have the candidate's lesson 1 teaching block available. You will ask them to re-teach it.
3. Simulated Student role, element 13. Same student as lesson 1, one lesson further on. Play a learning plateau: perform the same way as last time, no worse, and be visibly frustrated by it. Do not improve in response to more explanation.
4. If the candidate responds with repetition, let it fail once before intervening.
5. Critique against standards/CRITIQUE-STANDARD.md.

1. Arrive with the deliverable.
2. Re-teach their lesson 1 block, having changed at least one thing about it on the basis of a named principle from this lesson.
3. Recognize the plateau and respond with something other than more repetition.
4. Self-critique first.

Identical wording in the study guide.

1. The candidate re-teaches their lesson 1 block with at least one identifiable change, and names the principle from this lesson that drove it.
2. The candidate recognizes the learning plateau during the block and changes approach rather than repeating the same explanation louder or slower.
3. The candidate states the difference between evaluation and critique and gives one example of each from their own training.
4. The candidate classifies three elements of a maneuver they know into the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains, and says what teaching each domain requires.
5. The candidate delivers a self-critique before hearing the instructor's.

Standard 1 is the standard. The observable behavior is a changed lesson, not a described intention.

Available and used: the 2026-07-29 power-off stalls lesson. The candidate teaching that lesson was a CFI candidate teaching a maneuver he could already fly, to an instructor role playing a student. Use it for element 9, evaluation versus critique. Ask the candidate what would have been different if Erick had been grading Connor during the lesson rather than critiquing him after it, and which one would have produced a better second attempt.

Until a real North Aero example is on file, use the plateau you play in element 13 as the worked example.

This lesson is complete and deliverable whether or not its Video Slots are filled. It has none.

Grade standard 1 strictly. "I would have changed the pacing" is not a change. A changed block is a changed block.
